Principal CSA Engineer – Data Center Design (Civil, Structural & Architectural)

This is a full-time exempt (40+ hours/week), hybrid role located in Austin, TX; San Francisco, CA; New York, NY; or Seattle, WA, with approximately 20% domestic and international travel.

Summary

We are seeking a Principal Civil, Structural & Architectural (CSA) Engineer to define and lead the foundational physical design of next-generation, high-density data center infrastructure. This role is responsible for translating extreme-performance compute requirements into robust site, structural, and architectural systems that enable rapid deployment, operational efficiency, and long-term sustainability.

The successful candidate will own CSA strategy across a global portfolio of hyperscale facilities, ensuring every site is structurally resilient, code-compliant, and optimized for advanced cooling architectures and extreme-density AI workloads. This is a senior technical leadership role bridging design, construction, and deployment strategy across multiple concurrent programs.

Key Responsibilities

CSA Strategy & Standards

  • Own the overall Civil, Structural, and Architectural (CSA) strategy for data center design and deployment across the portfolio
  • Develop, maintain, and continuously improve CSA design standards, including:
    • Basis of Design (BoD)
    • Master specifications
    • Standard drawings and details
  • Define scalable design approaches for hyperscale and AI-optimized data center infrastructure
  • Establish lifecycle performance and sustainability standards, including embodied carbon reduction strategies

Site Development & Due Diligence

  • Lead site due diligence efforts including:
    • Geotechnical investigations and soil analysis
    • Site feasibility studies
    • Structural and civil risk assessments
  • Support permitting strategy and coordination with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs)
  • Evaluate site constraints and develop foundational structural and architectural approaches aligned with project goals

Civil, Structural & Architectural Design

  • Develop architectural and structural layouts optimized for:
    • Hot aisle / cold aisle configurations
    • Liquid cooling distribution systems and manifolds
    • High-density rack arrangements
    • Service corridors and operational access
  • Analyze structural systems for high-load infrastructure including:
    • Direct liquid cooling (DLC) racks
    • Air-cooled high-density racks
    • Immersion cooling systems
    • Seismic and wind load conditions
  • Define structural systems including steel, concrete, and hybrid framing solutions
  • Specify architectural requirements including:
    • Fire ratings and compartmentalization
    • Floor finishes and loading requirements
    • Acoustic performance
    • Envelope insulation and thermal performance
  • Ensure CSA design aligns with FM Global and applicable building codes

Construction & Delivery Support

  • Coordinate with construction teams to develop prefabricated modular MEP and structural skids
  • Support construction planning to minimize on-site labor and reduce schedule risk
  • Review design deliverables, shop drawings, RFIs, and field changes for CSA scope
  • Conduct site visits to evaluate construction progress, quality, and adherence to design intent
  • Support commissioning and operational readiness from a CSA perspective
  • Ensure design continuity from concept through construction and turnover

Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, controls, and infrastructure teams to ensure integrated system design
  • Interface with external architects, engineers of record, consultants, and contractors
  • Align CSA design decisions with operational, cooling, and power infrastructure requirements
  • Provide technical leadership across multiple concurrent global projects

Our Ideal Candidate

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, or Architectural Engineering (or related discipline)
  • 10+ years of experience in CSA design for hyperscale data centers, mission-critical facilities, or clean manufacturing environments
  • Deep experience with structural and architectural systems in large-scale industrial infrastructure
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Seismic design principles
    • Wind load analysis
    • Foundation systems and geotechnical integration
  • Experience with high-density compute environments and advanced cooling architectures
  • Proficiency with:
    • Revit
    • Navisworks
    • STAAD
    • RAM Structural System
  • Strong understanding of CSA integration with mechanical and electrical systems in data centers
  • Experience developing engineering standards, templates, and reference designs
  • Ability to operate in fast-paced, high-ownership environments with multiple concurrent projects

Preferred Qualifications

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE-Structural) or Registered Architect (RA)
  • Experience in hyperscale data center development or clean manufacturing facilities (semiconductor, pharma, etc.)
  • Familiarity with:
    • LEED or BREEAM sustainability frameworks
    • Lifecycle carbon analysis and embodied carbon reduction strategies
  • Experience designing for modular construction and prefabricated infrastructure deployment
  • Strong background in FM Global requirements and mission-critical construction standards
  • Experience coordinating CSA scope across global, multi-site portfolios
