Commissioning Engineer
This is a full-time W-2 contract (40 hours/week), onsite role located in Portland, OR.
Summary
Flux Resources is seeking a Commissioning Engineer to support one of our clients in Portland, Oregon. This position plays a key role in the successful delivery of capital improvement projects for potable water and wastewater treatment facilities by supporting commissioning, operational readiness, and project handoff activities.
The ideal candidate will serve as a technical liaison between engineering, construction, operations, and maintenance teams to ensure new and upgraded treatment plant and pump station assets are safely commissioned, fully documented, and operationally ready. This role also contributes to continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen commissioning processes and project delivery standards.
Key Responsibilities
Project Commissioning & Operational Readiness
- Support commissioning activities for water treatment plants, wastewater treatment facilities, and pump station capital projects
- Participate in design milestone reviews to ensure projects are aligned with operational requirements
- Coordinate with engineering, construction, operations, and maintenance teams throughout project execution
- Provide in-house commissioning support during construction and startup activities
- Develop and review process control narratives
- Review contractor Operational Readiness Testing (ORT) plans, procedures, and documentation
- Coordinate internal operational readiness testing, troubleshooting efforts, and documentation
- Deliver process and system training to operations personnel
- Support project closeout activities and ensure high-quality turnover documentation
Project Coordination
- Serve as a liaison between project stakeholders to improve communication and project integration
- Coordinate commissioning schedules and support issue resolution during startup and testing
- Track commissioning activities and ensure project milestones are achieved
- Assist with project documentation and quality assurance throughout project delivery
Process Improvement
- Support continuous improvement initiatives for commissioning and project delivery processes
- Assist with standardization of commissioning forms and documentation
- Improve as-built drawing accuracy and documentation quality control
- Coordinate with internal teams to streamline business processes and improve project handoff procedures
- Contribute to the development of best practices for commissioning and operational readiness
Our Ideal Candidate
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
- Experience supporting commissioning, startup, operational readiness, or project delivery for water, wastewater, industrial, or utility infrastructure
- Knowledge of engineering principles related to:
- Potable water treatment systems
- Wastewater treatment systems
- Water distribution systems
- Collection and pumping systems
- Experience participating in commissioning and operational readiness activities
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Ability to manage multiple engineering projects and competing priorities
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to build productive relationships with engineering, construction, operations, and maintenance teams
- Experience reviewing technical documentation, testing procedures, and project deliverables
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting capital improvement projects within municipal water or wastewater utilities
- Familiarity with process automation and control systems
- Experience developing operational readiness documentation and commissioning procedures
- Knowledge of construction turnover and project closeout processes
- Experience with documentation quality control and as-built drawing reviews
- Understanding of process training and operations support during facility startup
- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary project teams
Compensation & Benefits
- The pay for this W-2 position ranges from $70.00 – $80.00 per hour.
