Controls Commissioning Engineer (BMS / EPMS / SCADA) This is a full-time, full-time (40 hours/week), on-site contract role located in Austin, TX; New York, NY; Seattle, WA; or San Francisco, CA.
Summary This role is a senior Controls Commissioning Engineering position focused on the startup, validation, and turnover of mission-critical BMS, EPMS, SCADA, and PLC-based systems across hyperscale data center facilities in the U.S. and Europe. You will serve as the technical lead during commissioning, owning functional testing, system validation, and integrated startup activities across complex mechanical and electrical infrastructure. This includes coordinating closely with general contractors, design teams, vendors, and commissioning agents to ensure all systems meet design intent, safety requirements, and operational readiness standards. The role is heavily field-based and execution-driven, requiring deep technical expertise in controls systems, troubleshooting, and commissioning lifecycle management across multiple concurrent sites.
Our Ideal Candidate
5+ years of experience in controls commissioning, industrial automation, or mission-critical data center environments
Strong hands-on experience with BMS, EPMS, SCADA, and PLC systems (Allen-Bradley/Rockwell preferred)
Proficiency in PLC and HMI programming, debugging, and control logic validation
Deep understanding of industrial communication protocols including BACnet, Modbus, and Ethernet/IP
Experience with UPS systems, chilled water, HVAC, generators, and electrical distribution systems
Ability to execute commissioning test phases including pre-functional, functional, and integrated system testing
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Automation Engineering, or related field preferred
Preferred qualifications include:
Experience with ASHRAE or BCxA commissioning standards
ISA CCST or equivalent instrumentation/controls certification
Experience commissioning hyperscale or colocation data centers
Strong troubleshooting capability in live commissioning environments
Responsibilities
Execute full commissioning lifecycle (Levels 1–5) for controls systems including BMS, EPMS, PLC, and SCADA platforms
Serve as Owner’s Representative coordinating commissioning activities with GCs, engineers, and vendors
Develop, review, and execute functional performance tests (FPTs) and integrated system tests (ISTs)
Validate sequences of operations and ensure alignment with design intent and operational requirements
Maintain commissioning documentation including issue logs, test results, punch lists, and closeout reports
Perform on-site troubleshooting, system debugging, and resolution of controls issues during startup
Coordinate and oversee system handover to operations teams ensuring full readiness for service
Support multi-site commissioning programs across U.S. and international data center deployments

The base salary for this W-2 position ranges from $96.15 – $120.19 per hour, depending on experience, skills, qualifications, and location.
