Senior Electrical Engineer – Grid Interconnection & HV/MV Systems

This is a full-time exempt (40+ hours/week), hybrid role located in Austin, TX; San Francisco, CA; New York, NY; or Seattle, WA.

Summary

We are seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer to lead the design and integration of high-voltage and medium-voltage electrical infrastructure supporting large-scale, mission-critical data center developments. This role will be responsible for electrical systems connecting facilities to the utility grid, including substations, utility interconnections, transformers, feeders, and power distribution infrastructure.

The successful candidate will provide technical leadership throughout the project lifecycle, from utility interconnection planning and conceptual design through construction, commissioning, and operational support. In addition to engineering responsibilities, this role will serve as a key technical advisor during utility negotiations and power procurement discussions, helping translate commercial agreements into practical engineering requirements while ensuring system reliability, scalability, and compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, review, and approval of High Voltage (HV) and Medium Voltage (MV) electrical systems, including substations, utility interconnections, transformers, feeders, and distribution infrastructure
  • Evaluate utility interconnection opportunities and develop technical solutions that support facility growth and operational reliability
  • Manage grid interconnection processes and coordinate technical submissions with utilities, ISO/RTO organizations, and regulatory agencies
  • Review electrical designs, one-line diagrams, protection schemes, and substation layouts to ensure compliance with project requirements and industry standards
  • Provide technical guidance during power procurement and utility service negotiations, including evaluation of capacity, reliability, redundancy, power factor, and curtailment considerations
  • Assess operational and technical risks associated with utility service agreements and recommend mitigation strategies
  • Troubleshoot HV/MV distribution issues, perform root cause analyses, and develop corrective action plans
  • Support construction, commissioning, startup, and turnover activities for substations and electrical infrastructure projects
  • Develop upgrade strategies for existing facilities to improve capacity, resiliency, and efficiency
  • Conduct engineering audits focused on HV/MV infrastructure performance and operational readiness
  • Interface with utilities, EPC firms, consultants, equipment manufacturers, and internal stakeholders throughout project execution
  • Manage multiple concurrent electrical infrastructure projects across various regions

Our Ideal Candidate

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent combination of education and applicable industry experience
  • 7+ years of experience in HV/MV power systems, utility infrastructure, substations, or mission-critical electrical environments
  • Strong understanding of utility interconnections, substations, and electrical distribution systems
  • Experience managing engineering consultants, contractors, and complex infrastructure projects
  • Ability to evaluate technical alternatives and make informed engineering recommendations in ambiguous environments
  • Experience troubleshooting complex electrical power distribution systems
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills with utilities, contractors, consultants, and project stakeholders
  • Ability and willingness to spend time in the field supporting active projects and operational facilities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing, reviewing, or overseeing utility-scale substations ranging from 13.8 kV to 230 kV
  • Knowledge of protective relaying, protection and control systems, SCADA integration, and substation automation
  • Familiarity with grid interconnection studies, including:
    • Load flow analysis
    • Short-circuit studies
    • Stability studies
  • Experience supporting utility service agreements, power procurement efforts, or power purchase agreement (PPA) negotiations
  • Strong knowledge of IEEE, IEC, NEC, NESC, and regional utility standards
  • Experience reviewing:
    • Single-line diagrams (SLDs)
    • Protection and control schematics
    • Construction drawings
    • Equipment submittals
  • Experience supporting mission-critical facilities with redundant electrical distribution architectures
  • Familiarity with:
    • Transformers
    • UPS systems
    • Diesel generators
    • Static Transfer Switches (STS)
    • MV/LV switchgear
    • EPMS, SCADA, and BMS platforms
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred
