Geotechnical Engineer – Data Center Development
This is a full-time W-2 contract (40+ hours/week), remote role based in the United States. Candidates located in New York, NY; Austin, TX; or Seattle, WA are preferred. Travel to project sites is required as needed to support site investigations, due diligence, and construction activities.
Summary
We are seeking an experienced Geotechnical Engineer to lead the geotechnical engineering workstream across a growing portfolio of large-scale data center developments. This role will oversee subsurface investigations, foundation recommendations, site due diligence, earthwork strategies, and construction support from early site screening through design and project execution.
The successful candidate will partner closely with civil, structural, environmental, and construction teams to evaluate site conditions, mitigate geotechnical risks, and develop practical foundation solutions that support accelerated project delivery across multiple concurrent developments.
Key Responsibilities
Site Due Diligence & Investigation
- Lead geotechnical due diligence activities for greenfield and brownfield development sites
- Develop scopes of work and Requests for Proposal (RFPs) for geotechnical investigations
- Manage subsurface exploration programs, including:
- Soil borings
- Cone Penetration Testing (CPT)
- Field sampling
- Laboratory testing
- Direct external geotechnical consultants throughout investigation, analysis, and final reporting
- Evaluate geotechnical risks during site selection and provide recommendations regarding site suitability
Geotechnical Engineering & Foundation Design
- Interpret subsurface investigation data and develop engineering recommendations for foundation design
- Evaluate:
- Bearing capacity
- Settlement potential
- Expansive soils
- Collapsible soils
- Liquefaction risks
- Seismic site classifications
- Groundwater conditions
- Recommend appropriate foundation systems, including:
- Shallow foundations
- Deep foundations
- Pile systems
- Rigid inclusions
- Ground improvement methods
- Preload and surcharge strategies
- Collaborate with structural engineering teams to translate geotechnical findings into practical design criteria
Earthwork & Site Development
- Partner with civil engineering teams to develop earthwork and grading strategies
- Evaluate cut-and-fill balance and optimize grading plans
- Assess differential settlement risks affecting:
- Building pads
- Medium-voltage duct banks
- Substations
- Site roads
- Utility infrastructure
- Recommend grading, stabilization, and ground improvement solutions that minimize schedule and construction risk
Risk Assessment & Technical Leadership
- Identify geotechnical fatal flaws during site due diligence, including:
- Karst formations
- Mine subsidence
- Abandoned oil and gas wells
- Uncontrolled fill
- High groundwater conditions
- Expansive clay soils
- Provide technical recommendations regarding site viability and development risk
- Review consultant deliverables and challenge assumptions where appropriate to ensure technically sound recommendations
- Maintain project schedules by proactively resolving geotechnical issues before they impact design or construction
Cross-Functional Coordination
- Coordinate closely with:
- Structural Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Environmental Engineering
- Construction Management
- Integrate environmental findings, including groundwater and contamination issues, into foundation and site development recommendations
- Support construction teams during foundation installation and site development activities
- Review field conditions and provide engineering support throughout construction
Our Ideal Candidate
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
- 7+ years of experience in geotechnical engineering supporting large-scale site development, industrial, infrastructure, or mission-critical projects
- Experience planning and managing geotechnical investigation programs
- Strong understanding of:
- Soil mechanics
- Foundation engineering
- Earthwork design
- Ground improvement techniques
- Settlement analysis
- Seismic site evaluation
- Experience evaluating and recommending:
- Shallow foundations
- Deep foundations
- Pile systems
- Ground improvement solutions
- Ability to interpret geotechnical reports and develop independent engineering recommendations
- Experience managing external consultants and laboratory testing programs
- Strong communication and project coordination skills
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects in a fast-paced development environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) or Geotechnical Engineer (GE) license, or active pursuit of licensure
- Experience supporting data center, industrial, heavy civil, or mission-critical infrastructure projects
- Experience with:
- Deep foundation systems
- Ground improvement design
- Seismic site response evaluations
- Liquefaction analysis
- High groundwater conditions
- Multi-state project experience
- Familiarity with geotechnical software and analytical modeling tools
- Experience supporting projects from early due diligence through construction completion
Compensation & Benefits
- The pay for this W-2 position ranges from $90.00 – $110.00 per hour.
